Celebrating autumn with a bang, pumpkins will fall from the sky this weekend at Trinity Presbyterian Church’s third annual Punkin Chuck fundraiser.
“It’s actually an outdoor festival,” said Janie Sutton, member of the Punkin Chuck committee. “A few years ago we wanted to come up with a way to include the community in some fun outdoor activity while at the same time raising money to support Church and Community Services because we support them throughout the year.”
The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday on the Trinity church grounds on Blue’s Farm Road. Hayrides, a bounce house, and face painting will be among the activities available.
The centerpiece will be Trinity’s miniature pumpkin launcher and other pumpkin-themed games like pumpkin golf and pumpkin speed pitch.
“The idea for something outdoors led us to create our own miniature pumpkin launcher,” Sutton said. “We created a small launcher that launches those little pumpkins, but it sends them a pretty good distance.”
Tickets to the event are$1 per person or one canned good per person, with all monies and food collected directed to Church and Community Services.
There is an additional cost to launch a pumpkin or to participate in the games. Last year’s punkin chuck, attended by some 250 people, sent $1,000 and a carload of food to be distributed among families and individuals in need.
Punkin Chuck has been well-attended by Trinity’s neighbors, but the church parking lot will accommodate those coming from a little farther away.
The Scotland County Humane Society will bring a few adoptable animals out for the afternoon, and food will be available on site from Jerry’s Deli and Thee Other Guys BBQ. Musicians Shelly Sutton and Jerry Chapman, half of folk-pop duo Life in General, will be performing throughout the event.
“It’s just music, it’s food, it’s games and it’s really kind of homespun,” said Sutton. “We don’t have fancy games or glittery lights, it’s just a homespun afternoon for the family. We’ve tried to do it in a way that’s cost-effective for families.”
