The Scotland County JobLink Center recently held a Law Enforcement Seminar at Richmond Community College Diane Honeycutt Center in Laurinburg.
Joblink officials said they had hoped the seminar would generate interest in law enforcement careers.
Presenters for the seminar included Mr. Steve Smith, vice-president for Richmond Community College, Lt. Mark Godwin, Laurinburg Police Department, Chief Deputy Mitch Johnson, Scotland County Sheriff Department, and Betty Galloway, Manager , Department of Commerce Employment Services Joblink, and Arlene Thorne, RES Specialist, Scotland County JobLink Career Center.
The first part of the seminar was presented by Chief Deputy Mitch Johnson who provided detailed information on the daily activities of a sheriff deputy. He also provided an outline of the various departments within the organization. Participants were made aware of the various requirements to become a Sheriff Deputy.
Johnson selected a few participants to respond to the question,” Why do want to work in law enforcement? Responses ranged from serving the community to preventing criminal activity in this county.
Lt. Mark Godwin provided a description of the typical duties of a policeman along with the training and educational requirements for a career in law enforcement.
Godwin also told participants about the difference between the police and sheriff’s department.
During his presentation, Mr. Smith, Vice- President for Richmond Community College talked about the requirements and prerequisites for Basic Law Enforcement training.
“All the information that was provided by Lt. Godwin and Chief Deputy Johnson generated a significant amount of open discussion among the participants,” Betty Galloway, manager of the Scotland County JobLink Center said in a statement. “This seminar was very interesting and highly informative.”
Galloway also thanked the Laurinburg Police Department, the Scotland County Sheriff Department and Richmond Community College “for sharing their knowledge about law enforcement careers.”
