This year’s litter sweep helped remove 1,400 pounds of trash from Laurinburg streets.
More than 50 people participated this year, said Theresa Pinto, president of the Laurinburg/Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce, which sponsored Saturday’s event.
“I’m very pleased with the turnout and what was accomplished,” Pinto said. “We had team working together as well as churches involved this year.”
The chamber offered a “King of the Mountain” to the team that collected the most litter. That first place team received a $200 grand prize, while the second place team received $100 for their efforts.
This year the top team was East Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church, who collected about 925 pounds of trash.
The church’s pastor Michael Edds, said one group took on a one mile stretch of Old Lumberton Road and the second group targeted Main Street (starting at Church Street) to the railroad crossing. There were 33 volunteers on the two teams.
“It was an incredible day of cleaning up our lovely city,” Edds said. “We were joined by several other churches, friends, and community leaders. We collected 925 pounds of trash. Main Street is shining and so is Old Lumberton Road.”
The second place team was second was the city of Laurinburg, headed by Rodney Byrd.
“I’m hoping that this effort has made something of a dent,” Pinto said. “It is 1,400 pound less trash out there. Maybe people will get the message and stop littering.”
