In the case of one local business’s donation to the Laurel Hill Volunteer Fire Department, lending a hand meant offering a place to sit.
During a hot dogs and hamburgers gathering Thursday evening Laurel Hill Fire Chief Clyde Haywood thanked Ken and Dean Nichols of Nic’s Pic Kwik for the dozens of chairs the company recently donated.
“Charlie Fipps initiated this whole process. He came to us and said ‘What do ya’ll need bad?’” Haywood said. “At the time we needed an ice machine, and Nic’s Pic Kwik gave us an ice machine. Then they came back and asked again and we said that we needed some chairs for the classroom.
“And they gave us chairs.”
Seated in those same chairs, department volunteers listened to Haywood as he offered his appreciation for the donations.
“We want to thank them for helping out,” Haywood said.
Nic’s Pic Kwik also donated an ice machine to the fire department in the fall of last year.
“We try to give back in all of the communities we do business in, and the Laurel Hill Fire Department does a great job,” Ken Nichols said. “They said they could use an ice machine last year for their various fundraisers, so we were happy to help out.”
A Laurel Hill businessman and former Scotland County School Board member, Fipps praised Nic’s Pic Kwik and its role in the community.
“These guys have integrity. They don’t seek publicity, but in a small community, things like this need publicity. They don’t have to give back like this but they do,” Fipps said.
