While this year’s Putting on the Ritz fundraiser netted in excess of $100,000 for health care, one supporter of the event won a different jackpot.
The winning ticket was a raffle entry purchased by Stephanie Woodside of Laurinburg.
“I bought one ticket,” she said. “I was very shocked to win.”
Woodside purchased the ticket at Hair-itage Styling Salon in Laurinburg, where she works as a stylist. For several years, Woodside has donated gift certificates and hair care products to the Ritz silent auction.
Ken Nichols of Nic’s Pic Kwik said that the raffle, which raised just over $30,000 this year, is an effective fundraiser that allows thousands of people to contribute to local health care without being present at the Ritz.
“The foundation does so much for people in need in this community, so we went out and bought a really nice car, we sold 3,000 tickets, and raised $30,000,” said Nichols. “It brought an exciting element to the Ritz to have a prize as nice as a 2012 Chrysler convertible.”
This was the second year that Scotland Memorial Foundation has raffled off a car as part of the Ritz. Last year’s raffle, for a 2009 Toyota Yaris, raised $17,000. With the help of Scotland Motors and Nic’s Pic Kwik, the foundation decided to try for better results this year.
Tickets for this year’s car, a 2012 Chrysler 200 convertible, were sold throughout Laurinburg and Scotland, Robeson, and Marlboro counties for $10 each. By the time the winner was drawn at the close of the Ritz on Saturday night, 2,979 tickets had been sold.
