The striking image of a person carrying a cross up Main Street in the style of Jesus caused many to stop in their vehicles and stare on Friday.
Members of six Laurinburg area churches took part in “Crosswalk 2012” Friday morning, an event which saw several dozen members take turns bearing a cross (with wheels) around downtown Laurinburg.
The route took the group from Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church to the courthouse, where it stopped to reflect on their journey and what it represents.
Kevin Hunt, of “Men Under Armor”, the men’s ministry of Northview Harvest Church, said that the purpose of the Crosswalk is twofold.
“It’s kind of a living witness to other people, but it also has many spiritual benefits to those who carry the cross,” said Hunt.
“They all feel changed afterward.”
Another of the church members to carry the cross, Brent Webb, said that the attention the arresting image of a man carrying a cross creates is important, because it brings attention to what Easter and Good Friday represent.
“Hopefully we will reach people, and make them stop and think by doing this,” said Webb.
While the walk was mostly serious, there was one light moment when one passing driver stopped long enough to comment that “I love what you’re doing, but I never heard of Jesus wearing shorts!” to Webb.
Among the local churches represented were Grace Baptist Church, Northview Harvest, East laurinburg Church of God, Laurinburg Pentecostal Holiness Church and Multitudes.
