Police say an 8-year-old was mistakenly shot by two teenagers seeking revenge on someone else.
Officers responded to the Hunter Drive residence of Stephanie Fairley around 1:35 p.m. after the teens reportedly shot into the home using a small caliber handgun, according to Lt. Marc Godwin of the Laurinburg Police Department.
Investigators believe the teens had targeted someone else to settle a grievance and shot into the wrong home.
“They were in the area attempting to locate another individual that they were having an issue with from some circumstances last week, and this residence was hit by mistake,” Godwin said.
The child — Fairley’s son — was struck in the left shoulder and jaw by the bullet, authorities said.
The child was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he is in stable condition.
Antonio Lane, 16, of 1101 Apt. C Tara Drive, was apprehended at the Laurinburg Police Department and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was also charged with going armed to the terror of the public, possession of a handgun by a minor, shooting into an occupied dwelling inflicting serious injury, and discharging a firearm in the city limits. Lane was placed in the Scotland County jail under a $66,500 secured bond.
Another suspect, aged 15, was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, going armed to the terror of the public, possession of a handgun by a minor, shooting into an occupied dwelling inflicting serious injury, and discharging a firearm in the city limits. He has been transported to a juvenile facility to await his first court appearance.
