Charges expected in domestic violence death

A Laurinburg man is expected to be charged with homicide after the girlfriend he is accused of beating died on Saturday.

Lucio Vazquez Valdez, 53, of 207 McRae St. Laurinburg, had already been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill.

Valdez is accused of assaulting his girlfriend, Judy Patel on Thursday, according to Lt. Marc Godwin of the Laurinburg Police Department.

Godwin said that police were called to the home that the couple shared on Friday morning in reference to an assault.

When detectives arrived, Patel was being placed into an ambulance, the report said. She appeared to have been severely beaten, he said.

The 63-year-old woman was taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital and later flown by helicopter to Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. She died there the next day, police said.

Godwin said investigators are talking with the Scotland County District Attorney’s Office about upgrading the charges against Valdez to murder.

Valdez is in the Scotland County jail under no bond.
