The genre-bending play “Twists in Time,” is the latest St. Andrews University production to hit the stage at the Morris-Morgan Theatre.
Billed as “vintage radio recreated live on stage,” the play will include elements of both mystery and science fiction, according to stage manager Victoria Bickett.
A senior at SAU, Bickett said that the play will have universal appeal as it takes theatre goers on a journey to the heyday of radio drama. Showtimes begin Thursday.
“Everyone who comes will find something they will enjoy. It’s family friendly (and artistic director Chris Wood) really has a vision for the play that he is seeing through,” said Bickett prior to Tuesday’s dress rehearsal.
As director of theater production for SAU, Wood said that the play is uniquely demanding because of its unusual plot and live sound effects.
“In full rehearsal since the end of October, (the play) is unique in nature because it calls not only for general acting ability but also unique vocal technique. Actors are required to play the main characters of the story and additionally voice the parts of multiple characters in three separate stories depicted during the broadcast,” Wood said.
Six actors in the play will voice 22 separate characters.
Adding to the challenge of the production, the cast and crew have designed original sound effects – all of which will be performed live during the play.
Comprised of a mix of college students and area actors, the cast is talented and diverse, Wood said.
“(They) have worked diligently to present this fun flash to the past.”
Running Nov. 29 and 30 and again on Dec. 1, “Twists in Time” will play nightly at 7 p.m. at the Morris-Morgan Theater on the campus of St. Andrews. On Dec. 1 there will also be a 1 p.m. showing.
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for seniors and students.
“We are hoping that (the play) will bring fond memories to those that enjoyed radio of the 1950s and for those that were not around then, that it will introduce them to the creativity of the radio era.”
