More than 20 elementary education students from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke were at hand at North Laurinburg recently for a “Wizard of Oz” themed math night for parents and students.
According to North Laurinburg curriculum facilitator, the math night revolved around the five strands of math: numbers and operations, problem solving, algebra, geometry, and measurement.
The students designed one classroom for each strand of math and students from grades K-5 had activities to complete in each room, which were directed by the UNCP students under the advisement of Kelly Ficklin and Rebecca Berdeau. The parents and students rotated to three classrooms during the hour and a half activity time.
“We had over 150 parents and students to attend,” said North Laurinburg curriculum facilitator Susan Tucker. "We look forward to more partnerships with UNCP in the future. The students worked very hard and it was a great success.”
North Laurinbutg will hold an End of Grade night for grades three through five planned for May 10 from 6 to 7 p.m. Annie Cureton will be the guest speaker, sharing test-taking strategies and tips for students and parents.
