Some community-minded residents have a plan to bring Scotland County together. They are hoping to do it with the help of a 19th-century author and 21st-century technology.
The plan is to win $3,000 for Scotland County through a contest looking for good ideas.
The”good idea” being pushed locally is to provide the community with Mark Twain’s book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, according Jan Schmidt, executive director of the Storytelling & Arts Center in Laurinburg.
“Many of you remember the book fondly from your childhoods – but it’s worth another read and it is really worth having the entire community read it together, ” Schmidt said. “All you have to do is vote – that’s it – just use your computer or your social media to vote and to encourage others to vote as well.”
The community with the most votes wins.
Voting begins today at 3 p.m. and ends July 03 at 3 p.m. Each person gets one vote during the voting period. The winner is expected to be announced about a week after the contest ends.
“So please spread the word among your friends and families,” Schmidt said. “The idea with the most votes is the winner but you can only vote once. So let’s show the country that Laurinburg may be a small place but we are together and can get enough votes to win. Use your voice, email, social media!, texting and whatever other communication devices there are to encourage all to vote for “Read with Tom and Huck.”
The community reading project is a partnership with the Scotland County Memorial Library, the Storytelling and Arts Center and several other organizations.
The contest is being sponsored by Good, a media platform that promotes and reports on individuals, businesses and non-profits “moving the world forward.” Good produces a website , a quarterly magazine, and online video content covering a variety of topics, including the environment, education, urban planning, design, food, politics, culture, and health.
