A team of mobile dentists are taking their services to Scotland County this month and in August.
The Scotland County Health Department will host “Smile North Carolina” on July 23 and August 6. The group provides dental service to local children.
“We have invited the Smile Programs … to coordinate on-site dental care at our health department because we know how important taking care of children’s teeth is to keeping them healthy,” said Cardra Burns, Women, Infants and Children Program Director at the health department.
Tooth decay is the most common chronic and infectious disease among children and children with oral disease can suffer pain and difficulty eating.
The “Smile” team will set up a mini-dental office in the health department building and provide dental services for all children ages one to 18.
Children can receive preventive dental care at no cost, as Medicaid, CHIP, and most other insurances cover 100 percent of preventative treatment. However, for those children without dental coverage, charity care services are available.
No proof of financial status is asked.
The Smile Programs have been operating in the state for 14 years. All dentists involved with the project are state licensed and will conduct a complete dental exam.Following examination, every child is given a “report card” to take home.
Dental referrals are provided by Smile North Carolina if additional dental work is needed.
Services will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
