Relay for Life teams at local businesses, schools, and other organizations are in the homestretch of a year of fund raising for the 2012 Relay event.
Relay will begin on Sept. 22 as teams take to the Pate Stadium track in honor of those who have suffered from cancer and in an support of the search for a cure.
Another highlight of Relay for Life, the cancer survivors’ banquet, will be held at 6 p.m. today at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.
Fund raisers
Many teams will continue to raise funds in the weeks leading up to the event. Lil Bit Supporters, a team of Richmond Community College nursing students will sell concessions at Relay for Life, with proceeds directed toward their fund raising goals. The team also served as wait staff at Pizza Inn for an evening last week, collecting tips for Relay.
“The nursing students at Richmond Community College have participated in Relay for Life for several years now,” said Chase Green, Lil Bit Supporters’ team captain. “As students, we do it in honor of one of our nursing instructors who is winning her fight with cancer. The reality is that cancer is something that affects every single person’s life in some way or another.”
While some teams have had to cancel fund raising events due to lack of interest, The Butler Manufacturing/BlueScope Building team is still accepting entries for a golf tournament to be held on Saturday at Cypress Creek Golf Links in Laurinburg.
“Last time we did the tournament, in 2008, we raised $7,000,” said Debbie James, the team member in charge of the event. “We haven’t had as good of a turnout as we were hoping for this year, so we’re still taking entries. They can show up on Saturday morning to play.”
The tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, with an entry cost of $200 for a four-person team. A steak lunch will be served, with door prizes given out.

In other fundraisers, New Hope Baptist Church’s Relay for Life team, New Hope for a Cure, will hold a car wash from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. on Sept. 15 at Tractor Supply Company in Laurinburg. Team captain Amie Caulder said that the team’s first car wash, held in August, raised over $400 by washing cars for $5 each.
The team will also hold a pocketbook and bag sale later that day, from 2-4 p.m. at 10980 Plantation Road in Laurinburg.
“We’re really looking forward to the bag sale; we have some name brand bags and I hope it will do really well,” Caulder said. “We’re going to try to keep prices at $10 or below.”
Other teams are raffling off hot commodities to raise money. Meritor Stampeding for a Cure will sell tickets for a 7-inch Android tablet, to be drawn on Sept. 22 at Relay for Life. Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Contact 844-8469.
