St. Andrews University plans to add a Masters in Business Administration degree this fall.
School officials announced on Monday that St. Andrews had received final approval for the program.
“When we announced our partnership with Webber International University and changed our name to university, we made it clear that we intended to grow in this direction,” President Paul Baldasare said in a statement. “Our business program has always been a strength so starting with a MBA program was a natural fit.”
The first courses will be offered beginning in August. School officials expect to enroll about 20 students this fall. They hope to attract between 30 to 35 students per semester.
Robert Hopkins, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the university, said the program is structured to meet the needs of working professionals.
“We have four terms: fall, winter, spring and summer,” Hopkins said. “Full-time students enrolled continuously can complete the program in 19 months.”
The focus of the St. Andrews MBA is on the interdisciplinary nature of the business world.
“We want to develop the students’ critical thinking skills so they can adapt easily to business shifts,” said Hopkins. “Our graduates will upgrade their skill set, refine communication abilities and boost career mobility.”
Courses in the program include financial reporting, global economic environment, Marketing philosophy and management and topics in the legal and ethical environment of business, among others. In addition to the traditional classroom instruction, the St. Andrews MBA program includes practicum courses with a consulting project.
“Students undertake group-based consulting projects with faculty guidance,” said Hopkins. “These projects give students the opportunity to apply theory in a practical setting. Because they work as a team, the students gain valuable board room experience for future management positions.”
The program was approved by several entities including the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Board of Governors for the University of North Carolina.
