The Laurinburg/Scotland Area Chamber of Commerce Junior Leadership class recently finished a book drive that collected 364 books for local schools and the Scotland County Public Library.
“We are so thankful for everyone who donated books this year,” said Junior Leadership class member Sarah Hicks. “The support was great and we collected some really good titles to donate to schools and the library.”
Each year, the Junior Leadership class completes a group service project in addition to individual service hours and group outings focusing on leadership opportunities in Scotland County. In years past, the group has conducted a toy drive for needy children at Christmas and completed facility upgrades at the Scotland tennis center.
“With all the focus on literacy in the area, we thought that collecting books for young people would be a very worthwhile project,” said Hicks.
As an incentive for donations, the class offered a $100 Visa gift card to one lucky donor. Kitty Winchester, a social studies teacher at Scotland High School, was the winner.
