This weekend’s Lime-Aide Festival is the work of a Scotland High School alumni group which has rallied to support a pair of school friends.
“It started out with a Facebook page being created: ‘Class of 85 for Creed Sellers,’” said Andrea Kirby of Charlotte, a co-organizer of the event. “It’s been a much bigger outpouring than I expected.”
The festival will be held from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. on Saturday at Hutchins Farm to benefit Bette and Gray Sellers of Laurinburg, whose eight-year-old son, Creed, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma in December.
“Right now he is in Chapel Hill and he has been there over a week now battling a bacterial infection,” said Amber Hutchins, also a Lime-Aide organizer. “Bette has been up there this entire time. He goes and has chemotherapy weekly, and Bette and Gray have to take off time from work, so it’s been a balancing act.”
Hutchins Farm is at 12008 Purcell Road in Laurinburg. So far, some 30 vendors have registered for the event to sell food, crafts, produce, and general yard sale items. There will also be children’s games and performances throughout the day by several singers, a bluegrass band, and the Rhythm Explosion Cloggers.
Representatives from local fire departments and emergency services will be on hand to talk about safety, and the Scotland County Humane Society will be onsite with adoptable pets. The silent auction, which will proceed throughout the day, will include various items and rounds of golf at several local courses.
There will also be a collection of aluminum can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, which the Sellers family has used during Creed’s hospitalization.
The group of close-knit former schoolmates began planning the event in January, with an overwhelming community reaction.
“Everything has been phenomenal,” Hutchins said. “I can’t even tell you how many people have contacted us, the support offered by everyone. People I don’t even know are calling asking if they can give a donation.”
Admission is $2 per person, and vendor space is still available for $35 for a 15 by 15 space. For information about tickets or vendor space, call Kirby at (704) 618-4897.
