Authorities are searching for a Raeford man who reportedly tried to kill his ex-girlfriend and another man in Laurinburg on Sunday.
Willie Leon Jackson, 29, of Raeford assaulted Cheryl Medlin around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday outside the Morgan Street home of Robert McRae, according to police.
Medlin is Jackson’s former girlfriend, according to Lt. Marc Godwin of the Laurinburg Police Department.
Jackson also attacked McRae, 30, an acquaintance of Medlin’s.
Both victims were beaten with the handle of a shovel, suffering multiple head injuries, according to police. Jackson was prevented from killing the victims by McRae’s mother.
“The male victim’s mother was home and called the police,” Godwin said. “She actually tried to intervene to keep the situation from getting worse and called the police department.”
Jackson fled the scene after police were called. McRae’s mother did not suffer any serious injuries in the process of the assault. Medlin and McRae were taken to a medical facility where their condition was described as stable but serious.
Police were still looking for Jackson this morning. He is considered dangerous, Godwin said. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts should call the Laurinburg Police Department at 276-3211 or Scotland County Crimestoppers at 291-3333.
