Citing a change in the weather forecast, Scotland County Schools officials said Thursday night that they have decided to play it safe and dismiss class early today.

National Weather Service forecasters say that there is a possibility of winter weather in the area this afternoon, with a possibility for snow or sleet into this evening.

David Roller, transportation director for the school system, said that an earlier forecast made winter weather in Scotland County seem unlikely.

“But later in the day it looked like conditions may have changed, and they started talking about sleet and freezing rain so we decided to be on the safe side and do an early release,” Roller said. “Anytime they start talking about sleet and freezing rain it’s better to not take any chances.”

The early dismissal should help students and faculty avoid the weather altogether.

“The rain is not supposed to get here until 2 o’clock and with early release we can have most of our (students and faculty) home by then.”

The message was relayed to parents around 6 p.m. last night via the schools’ “Alert Now” system.

Early release dismissal schedule:

Elementary schools: 11 a.m.

Scotland High School: 11:20 a.m.

Middle schools: Noon

Early college: 1 p.m.
