The exhibit is a “mixed media composite” series that illustrates a theme of indigenous cultural reawakening and explores the folklore and history surrounding her Native roots. Hinton’s heritage and vision draw from Tuscarora, Saponi and Osage Indian Tribes.
The Awakening: Out of the Darkness will open on Thursday, February 21, and will be on display through the end of May. A reception for the show will be held at 7 p.m. in the Native American Resource Center in Old Main on the campus of The University of North Carolina at Pembroke.
The public is welcome to attend the opening reception and refreshments will be served.
In a statement about her work, Alyssa stated, “The Awakening is also about human kinship with the natural environment and the organic beauty I find in the elements. I like to think of it as a form of ‘visual soul’, and a refuge from our materialistic work world slumber. It can be a window through which we look inward and outward at the same time.”
Hinton is a graduate of NC State University with a master’s degree in art and design. She earned a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Temple University’s Tyler School of Art. She has also studied at the Parson School of Design in Paris, the University of GrenobleBeijing University and the Central Institute of Fine Arts in Beijing.
Hinton has exhibited widely in North Carolina and nationally, including at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. More information about the artist may be obtained at http://alyssahinton.com/wp/.
