The Spring Hill Fire Department was awarded a $3,000 grant from Pioneer this week to renovate and pay for facilities used for training.

Laurinburg plant operations manager Rick Love was on hand Friday to present the check to Ronnie Snead, Ronnie Grooms and Philip Norton, all firefighters with the volunteer department.

“We share some staff with the fire department,” Love said.

“Pioneer is really involved in giving back to the community,” said Snead, who works at Pioneer and volunteers with the fire department. “This is just further evidence of their good community membership. Last year we received a similar grant worth $13,200.

Grooms said that the money would be used to expand the 28-member department’s training ability. Three of the 28 members of the fire department also work at Pioneer.

According to Snead, the Spring Hill Fire Department does respond to fires in the vicinity of the Pioneer plant.
