Our military troops do a lot in the service of our country and other nations.
Beginning this week, you can do something to thank them for that service.
The Scotland County chapter of the American Red Cross is teaming with Laurinburg’s American Legion Post 50 to collect items needed by our troops in Afghanistan.
“We don’t have much out here so to receive a package, especially from someone who doesn’t know me, is really special,” said a Marine named Jack who serving in Afghanistan who receive one such care package.
A gunnery sergeant in Afghanistan expressed a similar sentiment.
“Not sure how you heard of me, but thank you so much for the unexpected gift,” he said. “Makes one feel good to know that even after 11 years, we are not forgotten. Semper Fi.”
To help, you can provide any or all of these approved items: Cookies (any & all kinds); Pop Tarts; Rice Krispy Treats; granola bars; fruit and nut bars; candy (mostly hard candy); ; Twizzlers (all flavors); nuts; trail mix; snack crackers (any kind); gum; beef jerky; and individual packets of drink mix (to use in bottled water.)
Personal hygiene items are also needed. They include lens cleaners (to clean goggles & eyeglasses); toothpaste and toothbrushes; mouthwash; shower gel; shampoo; deodorant; lotion; and Handi Wipes.
The local drop off locations are the American Legion Post #50, Scotch Meadows Country Club and the American Red Cross.
The items will be collected through Nov. 16. The care packages will be shipped to the troops in time for Christmas.
It is because of these soldiers and many others like them, we enjoy freedom each day on our country. What better way to show them we care than to send items they have requested.
