If you have a passion for service, a love of animals and strong leadership skills the Scotland County Humane Society may have the job for you.
The job was left vacant about two weeks ago when Sara J. Hatchell resigned for personal reasons.
Hatchell was named executive director 10 months ago. She came to Laurinburg after serving as adoption volunteers coordinator at the Robeson County Animal Shelter. She had been a dog trainer for 30 years.
Hatchell could not be reached for comment.
Interim director
The director’s position is currently being filled by interim Karla Jo Milholland.
While having served extensively with the shelter, Milholland said that she is only looking to serve until someone else is found.
The Humane Society is advertising the position in The Laurinburg Exchange until Thursday, after which board member Kathy Murphy said interviews will be scheduled.
According to Murphy, the 8 applications received so far represent a pool of high quality individuals from which to choose.
“We have had some really good applicants and we expect to have quite a few to pick from,” Murphy said.
Prioritized above all else when judging the applicants will be leadership skills, said Murphy.
Highlighting the challenging nature of the position, Murphy said that leadership is an innate skill that they will look to identify in applicants.
“It’s something that you really have to have the DNA for. Experience with animals will also definitely be a factor.”
Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Humane Society shelter and its five employees and assorted volunteers, the director is also relied on to conduct community outreach and fund raising activities.
“We hope to have someone who will be very visible in the community,” said Murphy, emphasizing the importance of continued donations to their efforts at the shelter.
According to Milholland, the new director will be faced with a challenging situation.
“We have had a tremendous number of animals coming through our door every day,” Milholland said.
In period between Jan. 22-28, around 43 animals were dropped off at the shelter.
“Donations definitely help, but what we need is for people to be more responsible. To spay and neuter their pets and to care for them,” added Murphy.
The director will be largely responsible for expanding the Human Society’s education program, which currently consists of a responsibility education program in local schools as well as at local public events.
The shelter also sponsors adoption days at Pet Smart stores in Aberdeen and Fayetteville as well as at the Tractor Supply Store.
