Pastor Dr. Paul G. Murphy of Franklin AME Zion Church in Laurinburg will be featured in a concert at Mariani’s Restaurant in Pembroke on Sept. 6.

Well known for his saxophone playing, Murphy will be accompanied by the “Paul Murphy Trio,” a group consisting of Maurice Barnes (piano), Drake Murphy (guitar) and Tony Streeter (percussion).

Attendees can expect “melodious spirituals and jazz” during the evening, which will also include a dinner. The event will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m.

In addition to having played alongside the likes of Carl Anderson, George Winston and Lou Rawls, Murphy studied music with Roger Hannay, Stephen Jaffe, TJ Anderson, Scott Lindroth, Louis Andriessen and Tony Bennett.

Murphy graduated from the University of North Carolina with a Bachelor of the Arts in music composition and theory, after which he received a Master of Divinity degree from Duke Divinity School.

More recently Murphy received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Hood Theological Seminary in Salisbury.

Tickets to the event are $25 and a semi-formal dress code is being enforced. Tickets may be purchased from the Gospel Music Store in downtown Laurinburg or by calling 276-7607 or 276-2923.

There is limited seating so the deadline to purchase tickets is August 19. Admission is by ticket only.
