In the varsity soccer Fighting Scots’ September 4th match with Jack Britt, a true pass from junior forward Rae’Quon Robinson set up teammate Carter Dold for a one-on-one situation with the Buccaneers’ goalkeeper. Dold would capitalize on the opportunity by sending his ensuing strike into the back of the net to put Scotland on the board.
The goal occurred in the latter part of the first half, and while Scotland would go on to lose to Jack Britt 7-3, the score was significant for one important reason.
It was Scotland’s first goal of the regular season. And for head coach Colin McDavid, it showed that his team is growing with each and every game.
“I’m still smiling even though we lost because we displayed a lot of growth that night,” McDavid said. “I think our guys recognized that they played well against a quality team, and it was good to see them with their heads held high.”
The Fighting Scots have gotten off to a rocky start thus far in their 2012 season. They haven’t won in the non-conference games they’ve played, including losses to Southview, Southern Lee, Cape Fear and Jack Britt.
But the effort and constant quest for self-improvement hasn’t tapered off in the slightest according to McDavid. And putting up three goals against the Buccaneers proves to the coach that there’s plenty of fight in his roster of kids that is largely comprised of underclassman.
“They never gave up through that rough stretch of games without a goal,” McDavid said. “We’ve been competitive all season but we’ve never quite put it all together. After that first goal we’ve looked like a brand new team ever since.”
Two days after their game against Jack Britt, McDavid was looking forward to seeing his team build upon that loss by hosting Whiteville at home. And at the onset, the Scots appeared to do exactly that, maintaining offensive possession and constantly forcing the issue against the Wolfpack.
Unfortunately, a thunderstorm appeared on the horizon and the game was subsequently cancelled.
“When the game got called against Whiteville we were seeing a new-look Scotland team,” McDavid said. “It was frustrating because we were firing on all cylinders and playing the best soccer we had all year.”
And if the Fighting Scots are ready to take the next step towards a successful season, this week will be the perfect time to start. On Wednesday night, Scotland will host Purnell Swett for its first conference game of the season beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the junior varsity Fighting Scots.
