LAURINBURG - The Optimist 10U All-Stars improbable run through the Cal Ripken Eastern North Carolina State Tournament ended Tuesday night, as they were defeated by West Raleigh 14-8.
Optimist beat Sandhills Monday night 19-18 in a thrilling contest in which the team overcame a huge deficit in the 6th inning to win. They then had to play West Raleigh in their next game and lost 13-2. Optimist had to beat West Raleigh two times in order to win the championship, but after losing on Tuesday they fell short of that accomplishment.
Despite the loss in the championship game, coach Scott Cole said the team was able to succeed this weekend because of their offense.
“Our teams have always been known for good pitching and good defense,” Cole said. “The deciding factor for us is if we are able to hit and we hit the ball really well this weekend.”
The Laurinburg Exchange erroneously reported in Tuesday’s edition that Sandhills defeated Optimist 14-8 and the two teams would need to play an elimination game in order to advance. Optimist staged an amazing comeback after presstime, and earned the right to play West Raleigh in the championship series.
