KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Led by senior pitcher Joe McCarty’s brilliant game, the fourth-seeded St. Andrews University baseball team advanced to the next round of the consolation bracket in Pool A of the conference tournament on Tuesday. McCarty threw a complete game three-hit shutout to lead the Knights to the 3-0 victory over the No. 8 seed Virginia Intermont College.
SAU will now play the loser of the No. 5 Bryan College and No. 1 Tennessee Wesleyan winner’s bracket game today at 1 p.m. VI is eliminated with the loss, falling to 21-30 on the season, while the Knights improve to 27-22.
McCarty’s second shutout of the season improves him to 6-6 on the year while lowering his ERA to 3.24. McCarty went all nine innings while walking just one and striking out six as he has now recorded 46 strikeouts on the year.
First basemen Tyler Jordan and designated hitter Matthew Beauchemin led the offense for the Knights as SAU did all their scoring in a three-run fourth inning. Beauchemin got things started as he crushed his third home run of the season to give the Knights the 1-0 lead. Catcher Daniel Whitecavage then reached base via error before third baseman Michael Luing singled to put two runners on with one out. After another out, right fielder Michael Durig walked to load the bases before Jordan knocked in two runs with his single to left-center.
McCarty pitched so well that he never even allowed a runner to reach third base and only let two players even make it to second base in his terrific gem.
Three SAU players make All-Conference
The All-AAC baseball team was released on Tuesday as well, with three Knights making the All-Conference first team. They included center fielder Tyler Radcliff, Beauchemin and starting pitcher Chris Fee. Reinhardt University won both player and pitcher of the year while Billy Berry of TWC was Coach of the Year. Radcliff was named to the Gold Glove team for his outstanding defense as well.
