LAURINBURG — Nearly 50 softball teams from North and South Carolina competed in Laurinburg over the weekend in the Top Gun Southeastern Winter Invitational tournament, forcing officials to open both the Morgan Complex and Optimist fields.
The 10-and-under Trouble group on Sunday represented Scotland County at the Morgan Complex, earning the No. 6 seed after going 1-2 in pool play — which began Friday evening — and finishing third overall in the consolation bracket.
Trouble 1oU started the tournament off with a 6-0 defeat to Diamond Elite. The squad played a much closer second game, but still fell 2-1 to Green Machine 03. Trouble started to get rolling in its last group game, however, as they won 11-3 over the Hit’N’Mill Vipers. But it was not the last time the two teams would see each other.
Trouble 10U was placed in the “B” bracket and lost their first game 5-0 to Carolina Force. They bounced back in the next game to crush Batitude 13-1. Another dominant victory followed, as a 15-2 victory over the Lady Rattlers put Trouble one win away from playing in the final game.
The only team in their way was the same group they had dispatched earlier — the Hit’N’Mill Vipers. However, the bats went quiet for Trouble as they were only able to put up two runs on the Vipers, losing 3-2. Trouble nearly started a rally when they scored in the final inning, but it was not enough.
The Top Gun group holds tournaments all around the region and frequently comes to Laurinburg. Full results can be seen on their website, playtopgunsports.com
