LAURINBURG — Katelyn Hunt took the first serve in Thursday’s match against Richmond, and she took the last, leading Scotland to a 3-0 victory over their rivals, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-17.

The senior hitter took the opening serve of the night for the Scots and lead them on an 8-0 run to start the first game. And with the Scots two points away from clinching another victory, Hunt stepped to the line again and delivered another ace before Madeline Milholland finished the match off with a kill.

Hunt served the ball 27 times against the Raiders. Nine of them were aces.

Scotland coach Molly Hayes said Hunt has always had a strong arm, but this season she has been working on her touch.

“Her placement has gotten a lot better. She’s able to hit the spots I tell her to go better,” Hayes said. “She has a very strong arm, so she came in as a good server at the beginning of the season and she’s just gotten better and better.”

The Raiders played each game close, with both sides able to keep the ball in the air for extended rallies. Despite sweeping their rivals, Hayes said the team did not have its best night on the court.

“We had moments where we played hard but we also had moments where we struggled to communicate and struggled to think before we play the ball instead of reacting to the ball,” Hayes said.

Fatigue may have factored in, as it was the third match of a busy week for Scotland. But Hayes said three-match weeks are common in the postseason, so this week could be a good preview of what is to come.

“We’ll have three games a week during the conference tournament and during the playoffs so we’ve just got to get used to it.”

Scotland improves to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference. They will host Whiteville on Sept. 24.
