Both SAU soccer teams win
GREENVILLE , S.C. — The St. Andrews University men’s and women’s soccer teams both left Bob Jones University as victors Thursday.
The men’s side got off to a strong 2-0 lead over the Bob Jones University Bruins on Thursday evening and then had to hang on for the 2-1 win as the Knights picked up their first win of the season in Greenville.
Junior forward Caio Liberatti scored both goals for the Knights. He logged his first in the 27th minute off an assist from sophomore Breno Calegari. He scored his second goal in the 54th minute off an assist from junior midfielder Martin Phillips.
SAU then had to watch as BJU made a comeback scoring just nine minutes later to cut their deficit in half.
However, that would be all that SAU freshman goalkeeper Leandro Custodio would give up as he made five saves to accomplish his first collegiate win of his career.
The Knights outshot the Bruins by a total of 23-19 as Liberatti also led in shots on goal with five while sophomore forward Andy Zimiso Stewart contributed two shots on goal.
The Knights (1-2) will next make the long trek to Dayton, Tenn. to battle conference foe Bryan College (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
The SAU women’s soccer team shocked the Bob Jones on the same night in double overtime as freshman Alejandra Bittelman scored the game-winning goal off a corner kick from sophomore Miranda Kearney with under five minutes to go in the second half of extra time to top the Bruins 1-0.
Junior goalkeeper Jessica Griffith logged her first shutout of the season as she played all 107 minutes of play and made seven saves.
Sophomore midfielder Hayley Peck led with five shots on goal while the Knights as a team outshot the Bruins 27-12 including 6-2 in the overtime periods.
SAU also had 11 corner kicks to the Bruins’ two.
The Knights (1-1) will also travel to Dayton today to face Bryan College at 5 p.m.
