Paper, pencils, pens, composition notebooks, 3-ring binders, markers, crayons, calculators, erasers, folders, glue sticks, and more! The list seems never-ending when you get the required supplies your child needs to begin a new school year. I hope, if you are reading this, you are able to provide the materials your child needs each year without it causing a burden on your household.
However, for so many Scotland County residents, when they receive their list at the end of the summer, they have no idea how they will pay for all of those items. For more than six years, I worked with young people before moving to Scotland County and I had moms in my office crying over how they were going to provide all they needed for their child to return to school. What a burden this can be!
For our Laurinburg After Five this week, our committee wanted to do something to help these parents who are burdened when it comes to the back-to-school shopping. Therefore, on Friday night, when you come out to the Morgan Recreational Complex to enjoy some great music with Goldrush, I ask that you consider bringing some of these items with you. School supplies will get you an admission into the Laurinburg After Five. This is a way you can help lessen someone’s burdens at the start of the school year, while you enjoy a great time.
There will be members of the Education Committee out there that evening to receive your supplies from you in your car, so you won’t even have to carry them anywhere. There will be a bus on hand to take the supplies to be distributed throughout the county to those who need it most. It is my belief that we all want to see our young people be successful. Our business community needs it as much as anyone else and we want to show our support and do what we can to ensure the success of our youth. They will be our elected officials, nonprofit leaders and decision makers for the future. Let’s all work together to give every child all he or she needs to be successful in the future.
I hope to see you all there Friday night for the talented band Goldrush! We’ll have lots of food, fun for the kids, and great music to enjoy.
Just don’t forget to bring your school supplies — and on behalf of the families who will benefit, I say thank you.
