This is an exciting week for us at the Chamber of Commerce. We are gearing up for Friday night, which is the finale of our Murphy-Brown Laurinburg After Five series. Last year, we hosted the Tams for the finale and by popular demand, we are having them again to end our series. They will be with us Friday night from 6-9 p.m. at the Morgan Recreational Complex at 1206 Turnpike Road.
We have also added another exciting event for this event — we will be bringing out and introducing the 2014 Fighting Scots Football Team during the Intermission. At this time, we will have the WLNC Hometown Radio Sports Team with us helping us to kick-off of the football season. Coach Richard Bailey, Scotland High School Principal Greg Batten, and Scotland County Schools Superintendent Dr. Ron Hargrave will all be in attendance to celebrate. We want this time of the program to serve as a community wide pep rally for the football team!
The entertainment for the evening, the Tams, was formed in Atlanta back in the 1960s. The founders of the group were Joseph and Charles Pope. They had Horace Key, Floyd Ashton, and Robert Lee Smith to join them. They began their group as a way of having fun to escape the circumstances in their life. They all purchased Tam O’shanter hats to wear on stage, therefore the name, “The Tams,” was born. Eventually, they signed with Arlen Records and went on to release more than 15 albums, one of which went Platinum and two that became Gold Records.
Current members of the band include Charles Pope’s son, Li’l Redd, Robert Arnold, Elton Richardson, Greg Gallashaw, and Reginald Preston. When they are performing, they still put on a show that is not just a show, but it is an experience for the people who travel from all over to see them. Friday night, they will bring that experience to us here in Scotland County.
I hope you will come out Friday night for this great experience called the Tams, cheer on your Fighting Scots, and enjoy the social network of Scotland County. Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs or blankets, but please leave your coolers and pets at home. We’ll have great food vendors to enjoy throughout the night. I look forward to seeing you there!
