Have you ever said to anyone, “I have the best husband/wife/mom/dad/daughter/son in the world?” I know I say that a lot about my husband, mom, and dad. A little more than a year in this position, I have a new line that I am proud to say: “I have the best board members in the world!” I now have had the pleasure of working with three different boards, the first for only a few months, but all of them collectively have been great to work with and I appreciate them more than what words can say.

We held our annual dinner this year on Jan. 23 at the Highlands. At that dinner, every board member was present, except Dale McInnis. He was attending an event for the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce, where he was receiving the Citizen of the Year. Congratulations to Dale. Had he not been receiving this award, I have no doubt we would have had 100 percent participation. That makes me very proud to be able to say that and I would venture to say that few chamber executives can make that kind of statement.

We also recently had a board meeting and we continued to pull in chairs to accommodate everyone. That is a great thing to have to do as well. It shows that your Chamber of Commerce is being led by caring individuals who are present and willing to put in the time and effort to provide a viable and meaningful chamber for not just the business community, but for all of Scotland County.

In addition to attending meetings, giving input, and support, there have been numerous occasions since coming to Laurinburg when I have had to call on these same folks for help, advice, or information. Each one of them has always been quick to help and do whatever they could to make our chamber better, knowing that a stronger chamber will only help strengthen our community.

I would like for you to know who the board members are for 2014 and if you know them, please let them know what a good job they are doing for our community.

Nick Sojka, Chairman; Lee Howell, Vice-Chairman; Joel Hartwell, Treasurer; David McLamb, Immediate Past Chairman; John Ferguson, Chair of Community Development; Dean Nichols, Chair of Merchants; Theresa Alexander; Kenny Bethea; Maria Bingham; Neal Carter; Brandi Deese; Wayne Freeman; Greg Icard; Kim Liles; Dale McInnis; Juliet McMillan; Charles Nichols; Kevin Patterson; Matt Pracht; Mary Sue Rabon; Angi Romaine and Rick Stout.

I am grateful for each one and appreciate all they do. I really do think I have the best board of directors in the world.

Tonia Stephenson is president of the Laurinburg/Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce.
