LAURINBURG — More 500 young people in Scotland County — and more than 6 million young people across the country — will this week celebrate National 4-H Week.

Scotland County kicked off the annual October event with Guy McCook, chairman of Scotland County Board of Commissioners and Angela D. Galloway, 4-H Extension Agent at WLNC Radio 1300AM, sharing the impacts 4-H has made in their lives. McCook read and signed the proclamation to name Oct. 6 through Oct. 12 as National 4-H Week in Scotland County.

Program participants were also acknowledged at a recent meeting of the Scotland County Board of Commissioners meeting. In Scotland County, more than 565 4-H members and 21 volunteers are involved in 4H.

“4-H, particularly 4-H presentations and public speaking have helped me excel in school, as I made good grades in those classes, particularly in my early college courses,” said Scotland County 4-H Member Langston Byrd.

Science, technology, engineering and mathematics workshops will be held in Laurinburg and Laurel Hill on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a goal to increase youth interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields as well as connect classroom instruction with hands-on learning and experimentation.

The North Carolina Cooperative Extension-Scotland County office will also this month introduce two new events — “What’s the Tea?” and “Saturday Academy.”

What’s the Tea is a free, family-oriented event in which families bond over a meal, game and activity from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday Academy brings summer fun to the weekend to provide fun, hands-on activities for youth and their parents. The cost is $10 per participant.

For information about 4-H programs, contact Angela D. Galloway, 4-H Extension Agent at 910-277-2422 or at angela_galloway@ncsu.edu.
