RALEIGH — State Sen. Gene McLaurin on Thursday honored the lifetime service of a local veteran advocate, Mary O’Neal.
O’Neal, a native of Richmond County, was accompanied in the Senate gallery by members of her family and Lacy Shepherd, who served as North Carolina AMVETS Commander in 2011.
“Mary O’Neal has been a strong advocate for veterans in our community for decades, leading the AMVETS Auxiliary of North Carolina as statewide president in 2013 and national executive committee representative for AMVETS Auxiliary of North Carolina in 2014,” said McLaurin.
“I have known Mary for many years and have always admired her spirit of true loyalty, service and dedication to our veterans. Her tireless work has led to many veterans receiving care packages, calling cards to call their families and countless services for disabled veterans and their families. I am proud to know Mary and humbled by this opportunity to recognize her in the Senate.”
After reading the Senatorial Statement aloud from the floor, McLaurin led the body in, giving O’Neal a standing ovation.
