GREENSBORO — The postseason honors continued to pile up for The University of North Carolina at Pembroke baseball team as five players — four first-teamers and one second-team pick — were lauded with all-state honors from the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association .

Infielders Jordan Edgerton and Daniel Fraga joined outfielder Drew Cole and designated hitter Dalton Knight on the first team all-state list, while starting pitcher Andy Sullivan grabbed a spot on the second team. A total of 24 players representing seven different region institutions comprised the team. The Braves led with five selections, while Catawba, Greensboro and Wingate were represented by four student-athletes.

It’s the seventh straight year that the Braves have been represented on the squad, as well as the sixth time in that span that UNCP has had multiple selections. The Braves sent five to the squad last season, including Edgerton.

Softball has three named All-State

GREENSBORO — Following the first season under the direction of head coach Brittany Bennett, senior Taylor Cloninger, junior Brea Hartley and sophomore Whitney Jackson continued to gather postseason accolades as the three Braves were named of the 2014 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association College Division All-State Softball Team.

All three Braves the team hold a five-game winning streak towards the end of the season, a back-to-back defeat of then-No.2 Kutztown in February, four series sweeps, three shutouts, six run-rule victories and one win in extra innings against opponents. Lenoir-Rhyne and Wingate each had five athletes on the teams, while UNCP each added three.

3 golfers named All-American scholars

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. — The UNCP womens golf team continued to build on a strong academic tradition as three athletes — sophomore Laura Bird and seniors Lizzie Bundy and Dana Watkins — were all named All-American scholars by the Womens Golf Coaches Association.

A total of seven Peach Belt Conference student-athletes were included on the list, including three from North Georgia. The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50.

Bird, a Pembroke native and a former Purnell Swett High School standout, compiled an 80.6 stroke average over 10 events and 18 rounds of golf this season, while also turning in a pair of top five finishes. A standout in the classroom as well, she maintains a 3.533 cumulative grade point average as a chemistry major.

Bundy maintained a 3.841 cumulative grade point average at UNCP and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in mass communications last week. A three-year starter for the Lady Braves, Bundy compiled an 81.9 career stroke average over 24 events.

Watkins, a three-year starter and two-time all-PBC selection for the Braves, maintained a 3.797 cumulative grade point average and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in exercise & sports science from UNCP. Watkins has compiled a 79.1 career stroke average over 30 events and 58 rounds of golf.
