LAURINBURG — Scotland High School has endorsed the applications of five students to three prestigious college scholarships.

Jack “Walker” Davis, son of Andy and Phyllis Davis, and Alexis Scott, daughter of William and Latisha Carroll, have each applied for North Carolina State’s four-year merit program, the Park Scholarship.

Every school is permitted to endorse two students for the Park Scholarship. Park Scholars receive a four-year scholarship — currently valued at $92,000 for in-state students — in addition to other benefits including individual guidance from professors, enrichment experiences and challenging roles in the campus community. About 40 scholarships will be awarded during the 2013-2014 year, with two-thirds designated for North Carolina residents.

Park Scholarships were established at NC State University in 1996 with a generous grant from the Park Foundation.

Davis was also endorsed for the University of North Carolina’s Morehead-Cain scholarship, along with Leslie Floyd, daughter of William and Susan Floyd and Adam “Kendall” Romaine, son of Adam and Angela Romaine.

It is a fully funded four-year merit scholarship to the university and covers full tuition, student fees, housing, meals, books and a laptop, supplies and a four-year Summer Enrichment Program made up of diverse, customized experiences that begin the summer before freshman year and include outdoor leadership, public service, inquiry and exploration, and money to be used for education opportunities.

Endorsed for Davidson College’s John Montgomery Belk Scholarship was Anna Lisa Ciarrocca, daughter of Brian and Melisa Ciarrocca. Ciarrocca is the only candidate from Scotland High nominated for the scholarship, as per the college requirements.

Candidates for this scholarship must show a strong academic record and recommendations must demonstrate academic excellence and purposeful engagement in the classroom, with student and civic organizations, on the athletic field, or in the arts.

Belk Scholars also exhibit intellectual curiosity and a commitment to both their local and global communities. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, room and board plus study stipends, as well as two stipends, up to $3,000 each, to support intellectual, personal, and leadership development during the college years.

In recent years, the stipends have been used to explore learning opportunities in this country and abroad. Only one candidate from each school may be nominated.
