LAURINBURG — Police arrested around a Smithfield man shortly after midnight on Saturday after he fled a traffic stop on foot and, while resisting arrest, dropped five bags of marijuana, according to a police report.

Gary Jamal Becton, 25, is being held in the Scotland County jail under a $30,000 secured bond for felony possession with intent to sell marijuana, intent to sell and deliver, felony maintaining a drug vehicle, possession of paraphernalia, assault on a government official, vandalism, resist, delay or obstruct, according to Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms.

Becton was also cited for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Sessoms said Becton was stopped near the intersection of Anne and Wooster streets. Officers smelled marijuana when they approached the vehicle, Sessoms said, and asked Becton to step out of the vehicle.

He fled immediately, according to Sessoms, and tried to fight off officers as they were in the process of handcuffing him.
