LUMBERTON — Robeson County veterinarians from March 3 through March 15 will band together to offer discount spay and neuter services to folks in Robeson and the surrounding areas.
The program, the eighth semi-annual, was implemented as part of the national program Spay Neuter Improves Pets, or SNIP, to decrease the number of free-roaming strays, unwanted litters and overpopulation of dogs and cats in rural areas by offering sterilization services at the rate normally reserved for specialty groups.
“It’s offered to anyone, no matter where they live, from Robeson to Scotland to Cumberland county,” said David Brooks, Robeson County veterinarian, “and there’s no limits on income.”
Prices the service vary depending on the size of the pet, but Brooks said the discounted rate for a female cat, including anesthesia, pain and surgery would be about $75, down from a regular rate of $100-$125. The discount rate for a large-breed female dog would be about $100, down from a normal charge ranging anywhere from $150-$175.
Brooks said state mandates require veterinarians to administer rabies shots to animals 4 months and older that have not been vaccinated, at a price that usually ranges from $10 to $15.
“If the dog does not have a rabies shot, it will be given a rabies shot, which is not included in the price,” Brooks said.
Anyone wanting to take advantage of the discount can make an appointment with the following veterinarians:
Baird’s Animal Hospital, 3169 Elizabethtown Road, Lumberton, 910-739-4998; North End Veterinary Clinic, 5791 Fayetteville Road, Lumberton, 910-738-9368; Southeastern Veterinary Hospital, 1720 N.C. 211, Lumberton, 910-739-9411; South Robeson Veterinary Hospital, 5412 N.C. 41 South, Fairmont, 910-628-7178; North Star Veterinary Hospital, Parkton, 910-858-2525; Pembroke Veterinary Hospital, 1447 Prospect Road, Pembroke, 910-521-3431.
