LAURINBURG — Police have identified a body found floating in a creek on Tuesday as that of a 53-year-old Laurinburg man.

Evans Smith, of 1400 Dixie Guano Road, was pulled from water near the intersection of Barnes Bridge and Harry Malloy roads after a passerby saw the body and dialed 911 at about 9:58 a.m.

Scotland County Sheriff Shep Jones said investigators do not suspect foul play in Smith’s death. A medical examiner, who made the positive identification, also said Smith had drowned, Jones said.

According to an obituary in today’s newspaper, Smith is survived by two sons, two sisters, his father and a brother. A memorial service is set for 2 p.m. Saturday.
