PEMBROKE — The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, in consultation with deans, academic department chairs and departmental financial managers, has established a plan for addressing more than $3 million in budget cuts called for in the state budget.

The plan calls for the elimination as many as 36 positions — 10 filled and 26 vacant — the consolidation of departments and the possibility of curtailing or eliminating the Physics, Theatre, Music Education and Art Education programs. Recommendations also include the reorganization or consolidation of six academic departments.

“These decisions are never easy,” Chancellor Kyle R. Carter said. “I am considering the recommendations made by office heads, deans and vice chancellors. In the final analysis, we will implement a plan that will be least disruptive to our mission and enable us to continue to provide an engaged learning experience for our students.”

The plan, created with input from each academic department, was reviewed by the University Budget Advisory Committee, made up of administrators, faculty and staff, and was presented Friday to the board of trustees for comments.

Before finalizing the plan, Carter will discuss with his Cabinet members feedback collected from the trustees and from the University Budget Advisory Committee. Carter will announce the final plan no later than Oct. 15, but departments and individuals directly affected will be notified prior to that date.

The mandatory budget reduction of $3,194,283 required that university reductions meet targeted amounts in the areas of operational and instructional efficiencies. The university’s reduction plan includes $662,468 in operating and instructional expenses — and more than $2.5 million in personnel expenses, which Provost Ken Kitts said “could be tied to the discontinuation of academic programs with low enrollments.”
