LAURINBURG — Shortly after noon on Wednesday, about 30 people packed the small Jersey Mike’s Subs franchise on McColl Road, either enjoying or waiting to make a purchase which benefited patients of the Scotland Cancer Treatment Center.

It is the second time that the restaurant has chosen Scotland Memorial Foundation to benefit from the company’s annual Day of Caring, during which 100 percent of proceeds are donated to a cause.

“Almost every family in Scotland County has been touched — either family or friends — by cancer,” said Ron Gibson, owner of the Laurinburg and Pembroke locations. “…I just wanted to do something that will support our hospital foundation.”

“This year all of the proceeds will go to support the patients at Scotland Cancer Treatment Center and it will provide wigs and personal care items for patients in need,” said Kirsten Dean, executive director of Scotland Memorial Foundation. “It will help with transportation costs, medication — costs for patients who, otherwise, might have to go without.”

Last year the foundation raised more than $10,700 and Dean said this year they’re “hoping to exceed that goal.”
