LAURINBURG — A South Carolina man was killed after his vehicle collided with a truck on U.S. 74 early Friday morning.

Billy Barfield of Latta, S.C. was headed east on U.S. 74 near Exit 185 when the crash occurred at about 3:23 a.m. Laurinburg police say Barfield’s 2000 Geo Tracker was struck from behind by a Ford box truck driven by Johnny Chamber of Charlotte.

Police said both vehicles ran off the highway, but Barfield’s car flipped after hitting a North Carolina Department of Transportation sign.

Barfield, who works at Scotland Container, was pronounced dead at the scene. Chambers was taken to an area hospital, but police were not sure which one or the extent of his injuries.

Laurinburg Police Chief Darwin “Duke” Williams said authorities plan to release more information on the accident in a report next week.

“We’re trying to piece together just what happened,” Williams said. “Right now we have a victim that can’t speak for himself. It is a real sad situation.”
