ROCKINGHAM —Two Laurel Hill men are among those arrested in connection with illegal gambling following an investigation into the operation of illegal poker machines by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies executed two search warrants — one on Breanner Street, west of Rockingham, the other on U.S. 1, south of Rockingham — last Friday, recovering a total of eight video poker machines, according to a late Tuesday release from the sheriff’s office.

On the day before the searches, deputies arrested 45-year-old Samuel Lynn Dunn and 22-year-old Darian Alexis Dunn, both of Hunt Club Road in Laurel Hill, 43-year-old Kevin Shonnell Roberts of Leonard Street, west of Rockingham and 36-year-old Timothy James Quick, of Entwistle Road, north of Rockingham.

Each was charged with two counts of gambling, to counts of operating or possessing slot machines and two counts of manufacturing or selling slot machines and given a $15,000 unsecured bond.

On Friday, deputies arrested 38-year-old Sandy Kay Bass of Safie Second Street, in East Rockingham, on one count each of allowing gambling in a public house, allowing gaming tables and operating or possessing slot machines. She was released on a written promise to appear.

All charges are misdemeanors. Deputies say the investigation is ongoing and more arrests may result. Investigators say there have been 24 gambling busts since July 2013.

The defendants are scheduled to appear in court July 28.

Online records show Darian Dunn also has court appearance the same day in Anson County on speeding and window tint violation infractions.

Roberts has several past convictions, including on felony charges of possessing and trafficking a Schedule II controlled substance and two misdemeanor counts of communicating threats.

Anyone with information concerning the operation of illegal gambling machines is encouraged to call the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office at 910-895-3232 or Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.
