LAURINBURG — The Scotland County NACP Youth ACT-SO will hold its annual Juneteeth Program on Sunday, June 19 at 4:30 p.m. at the Storytelling Center on Main Street.
Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is a holiday that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in June 1865, and more generally the emancipation of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South.
Laurinburg native, Levern Hamer, the first social media intern for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, is the guest speaker. The 2012 Scotland High School graduate, has a degree in in Theatre Arts Administration from Howard University. Hamer has been involved in the production and stage management throughout his time at Howard and served as president of the Howard Players Club.
