LAURINBURG — A South Scotland Elementary School student was the winner of a safety billboard contest sponsored by Lumbee Electric Membership Corporation.

Kylee Howell, a fourth-grade student in Magen Shipton’s class, will have her award-winning drawing made into a billboard.

Howell’s drawing was based on safety near power lines and staying away from them when playing outside. The billboard is displayed on U.S 74 near Maxton.

Howell was presented with a gift card and framed plaque of her drawing from President and CEO of LREMC Steven Hunt.

“I am very happy about winning this contest,” Howell said.”I worked hard on my drawing and am very excited about seeing my billboard in real life.”

Shipton said she was proud of Howell’s hard work.

“When something big like this happens to a small town kid, it shows them that they can do whatever they set their mind to,” the teacher said.”I hope this inspires them to continue to work hard and strive to do their best.”
