LAURINBURG – Expectant moms and dads and those who plan to be expecting soon are invited to a free event on May 5.

A Pregnancy Health Fair, sponsored by the Women’s Center at Scotland Memorial and funded by Scotland Memorial Foundation, will be held at the Community Health and Rehabilitation Center on the hospital’s campus from 5:30 to 7 p.m.

“The Pregnancy Fair provides expectant parents with information that will positively affect the health of both mother and child,” said Kim Locklear, manager of Scotland Memorial Hospital’s Women’s Services. “Participants will have the opportunity to learn information to enhance their chances of having a healthy baby.”

Approximately 15 exhibitors will be present.

“We’ve invited OB/Gyn offices and the Purcell Clinic, as well as community agencies,” Locklear said. “Daycare centers, pharmacies, and other businesses will provide information about their services. The Scotland County Health Department will provide information on their numerous services, such as Health Check, folic acid, parenting classes and car safety seat education, and maternity care. Exhibitors will provide handouts, giveaways and samples.”

Participants may visit the exhibits from 5:30 to 6 p.m. The program begins at 6 at the WR Dulin Conference Center.

“We have three speakers who will cover some great topics,” Locklear said.

Pediatrician Dr. Freda Singletary of the Purcell Clinic will help parents understand the role of the pediatrician and when to call if there is a problem.

Certified Nurse Midwife, LaTonya Armstrong, of Women’s Health Center of the Carolinas will explain the role of the nurse midwife and Carlotta Rivers, a registered nurse with the Scotland County Health Department will provide information about the services offered at the Health Department.

Registration is required for the Pregnancy Fair and can be made by calling 910-291-6806 or by visiting the Events page at scotlandhealth.org. Due to space limitations, expecting moms may bring only one guest.
