Drivers sought in hit-and-run accidents

HAMLET — State troopers are seeking the public’s help to identify and locate drivers in two hit-and-run crashes in Scotland County, one of which resulted in a scooter rider’s death.

Terence McRae was walking south on Lee’s Mill Road outside Laurinburg around 8:29 p.m. Feb. 5 when a vehicle struck him from behind, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol and Richmond County Crime Stoppers.

The driver left the scene and the vehicle has not been located. The vehicle is believed to be gold-colored and have damage to the right-side mirror.

At 11:57 p.m. May 5, 2015, Robert Newton was riding a red and black Taotao scooter and traveling south on Marston Road near Laurel Hill when a vehicle struck him from behind, Crime Stoppers said, causing severe injuries that eventually led to his death.

That vehicle, described as a Chevrolet or GMC pickup or SUV, left the scene and has not been located.

Anyone with information on either crash is asked to call Richmond County Crime Stoppers at 910-997-5454.

Tips can be given anonymously and information leading to an arrest will result in a cash reward of up to $1,000.
