LAURINBURG — Police are investigating a case involving a woman who reportedly attempted, with a group of armed individuals, to take custody of her child from a home on McKay Street.
On Sunday around 7:40 p.m. Christopher Swain, the father of the child, was at his residence on McKay Street with the child, his new girlfriend and a few other people.
Police say they were told that the mother, Sophiana Waddell, showed up with six other people and entered the residence. She assaulted Swain by pushing him and demanded he give her the child, according to a police report.
The police report said Swain grabbed the child and ran to another part of the residence.
The people with Waddell then produced a gun, according to a police report. Officials say the new girlfriend was told go to another part of the home while the group looked for Swain and the child.
No one was injured in the case and police say the subjects left the residence without the child.
Police declined to say how old the child was.
Police say the case is still under investigation and they will be conducting interviews to get the full incident report.
“We plan to make contact with Ms. Waddell,” said Assistant Chief of Police Cliff Sessoms. “We are trying to investigate all parties to get statements and their version of what occurred.”
