LAURINBURG- Residents have two days to get a free tree in the city’s Annual Tree Giveaway Program offered by Laurinburg’s Beautification Department.

Customers may choose from Red Crepe Myrtle, Yoshino Cherry, Willow Oak, Eastern Redbud and Sugar Maple trees.

To qualify residents must live in the city limits. Due to the popularity of the program, only two trees will be given per customer.

“We do have people that will take advantage of the program. We just try to make sure that their planted wherever the people want them to go,” Beautification Supervisor Rodney Byrd said.

Once an order is placed, a flag will be given to place on a visible location of the property. In late November, the city workers will return to plant the customer’s choice of tree.

According to Byrd, the Red Crepe Myrtle and the Yoshino Cherry trees tend to be a customer favorite. The Red Crepe Myrtle is the smallest of this year’s selection and the Willow Oak is the largest.

“Their actually good for people to use because you don’t have to get out and water them every day,” Byrd said.

Last year, the program gave away Live Oaks, Kousa Dogwood, River Birch and Eastern Redbud trees.

The program began about three years.

Those interested in the program, can call the Beautification Department at (910)276-8257. Orders will be accepted until Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
