LAURINBURG — A Marston man is expected to appear in court next month on 44 charges of child pornography, according to booking records.

Steven Cote, 37, was arrested at his Wright Road home in August 2014 after authorities say he sent child porn to an undercover detective in an Internet chat room.

He was initially jailed in Wake County, but was booked into the Scotland County jail on Wednesday under a $1.3 million secured bond. Booking records also list “Hold for court” accompanying his charges.

Cote faces 22 counts each of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor and 22 third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

The second-degree charge applies to defendants accused of recording, copying, distributing, showing, buying or selling “material that contains a visual representation of a minor engaged in sexual activity,” according to N.C. General Statute 14-190.17. The third-degree charge applies to possession of that material.

Cote’s arrest followed a sting in which a Cary police detective posed as a person looking for sexually explicit photos of young girls, according to the News & Observer of Raleigh. The newspaper said Cote’s Scotland County home has a Marston address.

Cote is scheduled to appear in Scotland County Superior Court on the charges Oct. 12.
